Eagles’ Women End League Campaign on a High
Wednesday 12 April 2017 23:03
The women’s team completed the league double over bottom side London Angels at the weekend with a 24-22 victory meaning a top-4 finish is looking ever more likely.
Having beaten Angels 17-18 in November West London Eagles Women knew that their final game of the season would be a tough affair; particularly so, given 3 points for Angels would lift them off the foot of the table.
Both teams began well and early on neither could be separated. However, as the half went on unforced errors crept into the Eagles’ game, allowing Angels to pull 3 goals clear. In addition, a serious injury to centre-back Dorina Tituleasa midway through the half meant all signs were pointing to an uphill struggle. Yet, late in the half, as London Angels failed to convert their chances, West London found their rhythm again going into half-time just one goal down at 11-12.
In the second half the wheels truly came off London Angels’ attack. This, coupled with a stellar second half performance from Anette Utby, for the second week in a row, Eagles pulled into a 19-14 lead. However, then it was West London’s turn to falter. After what appeared to be a mix-up, Ericka Recska returned to court too early following a two-minute suspension resulting in her third of the game and subsequent red card. This was quickly followed by a straight red card for Lucie Duluc after catching an Angels defender with a point-blank shot.
Despite the setbacks Eagles continued to apply the pressure maintain a four goal advantage until the final two minutes eventually sealing a 24-22 victory. The three points means that only NEM Hawks can catch them from below, however it would require three straight victories for them to do so making 4th place a likely final league placing for the women’s team.
They now turn their attention to the EHA National Cup semi-final against London GD on the 22nd April at Leyton Score Centre, throw-off at 2.30pm.
